Cupcakes

Dragonfly Cupcakes

What you'll need

• Batch of cupcakes
• White frosting
• Blue Sour Punch Straws
• Brown M&M's candies
• Swedish Fish, red and/or orange

How to make it

1. Frost the cupcakes.
2. Cut the Sour Punch Straws into 2-inch lengths and place one length atop each cupcake for the dragonfly bodies. Press the front of each body a bit deeper into the frosting than the tail end.
3. Place an M&Ms candy at the head of each dragonfly body.
4. Arrange four Swedish Fish candies behind each dragonfly head to resemble two sets of wings.

Button Cookies

Button Cookies

In a fairy's world, buttons are used for all sorts of things, such as tabletops, pot lids, dishes, trail markers ... the list goes on. Here's a fun treat that celebrates the versatility of this nifty notion -- a colorful batch of button cookies.

What you'll need

• Batch of sugar cookie dough (homemade or store bought)
• Food coloring
• Plastic kitchen gloves (for kneading food coloring into the dough)
• Rolling pin
• Flour
• Wax paper
• Small round cookie or fondant cutters (about 2 1/4 inches wide)
• Small bottle cap (slightly smaller than the fondant cutter)
• Wooden kitchen skewer
• Spatula
• Baking sheet
• Wire rack

How to make it

1. Divide the dough into thirds or quarters. Then knead a different shade of food coloring into each portion of dough. Chill the dough so that it will be stiff enough to hold its shape while baking.
2. When you're ready to start baking, work with one color of dough at a time. Roll the dough out to about a 1/4-inch thickness and use the cookie or fondant cutter to cut out a bunch of small circles. If you like, use a small bottle cap to gently imprint an inner circle on some or all of the buttons.
3. Use the blunt end of the kitchen skewer to make a set of two or four buttonholes in the center of each cookie.
4. Place the cookies on a baking sheet and bake them according to the recipe directions. Transfer the baked cookies to a wire rack to cool before serving. Enjoy!

Tinker Bell's Fairy Wings

What you'll need

• Template for Tinker Bell Wings Cake
• White or yellow cake baked in 9- by 13-inch pan
• Frosting (white for the cake top and green for the sides)*
• Green sugar pearls (found in the baking aisle of the grocery or craft store) or other small green candies
• Icing roses or other flowers (found in the baking aisle of the grocery or craft store)
• Green decorating icing with leaf tip (optional)
• * Note: Homemade frosting or decorating frosting works best for this cake. Most readymade creamy varieties will not harden and therefore aren't effective in sealing in the crumbs along the cut edges of the cake. If you prefer readymade frosting, you can t
• Scissors
• Tape
• Spatula or knife for frosting the cake
• Kitchen knife

How to make it

1. Using the serrated kitchen knife (a bread knife works well for this), level the cake by carefully slicing off the domed portion of the top. Then place the cake, cut side down, onto a wax paper-covered piece of cardboard.
2. Print the template. Cut out the pieces and tape them together, as shown, so that they overlap just slightly. Place the completed template atop the cake and use a kitchen knife to cut through the cake along the paper edge, as shown.
3. Spread an initial coat of frosting, just thick enough to seal in the crumbs, on the two assembled cake pieces. Chill the cake for 30 minutes to harden the frosting.
4. Carefully lift the wax paper on both sides of the cake and transfer it to a cake board or large serving tray. With the wax paper still in place, spread on a second coat of frosting and smooth the surface with your spatula. Use a damp paper towel to carefully wipe any excess frosting and crumbs from the wax paper around the perimeter of the cake. Then you can trim the paper close to the cake edge, if you like.
5. Now you can decorate the cake top with icing roses, piped-on leaves, and pretty sugar pearl swirls.

Halloween Crafts

Witches hats

This bewitching witch's hat makes a great table decoration for your Halloween party.

What you'll need

• 2 sheets of black construction paper
• 1 sheet felt (green, orange, purple, or red)
• Strip of black felt
• White craft glue
• Scissors
• Tape

Buy construction paper at the dollar store for plenty of fun projects. Felt is inexpensive so stock up on 5 or 6 sheets each time you go to the store. Traditional Halloween colors include black, orange, purple, red and green. However, you can use whatever colors you like for this project!

How to make it

1. Roll 1 sheet of black paper into a cone. Secure with tape.  
2. Trim the bottom of the cone so that it will stand up on the table.  
3. Use a cup or jar as a guide and cut out a circle from black paper large enough for the hat brim.  
4. Glue the cone to the circle and set aside to dry.  
5. Cut ¼” or ½” strips of felt and glue them around the cone.  
6. Cut a strip of black felt to go around the base of the cone.  
7. If you like, cut a bat out of black felt and glue to your hat.

Turkey Fridge Magnet



You’ll be amazed at just how easy these cute turkeys are to make. If you prefer to skip the painting steps, be sure to check out the helpful tips at the end for simple substitutions.

What you'll need

• 3” wooden heart
• 1” wooden heart
• 1 ½” wooden football or oval
• 8-10 colorful feathers (red, brown, orange, yellow)
• 2 miniature craft sticks
• Acrylic craft paint: brown, red, yellow, white, black, orange
• Sponge applicator
• Small paint brush
• White craft glue
• Wax paper
• 2 magnets of medium weight

How to make it

1. Paint the 3” wooden heart and the wooden football brown.  
2. Paint the 1” wooden heart red.  
3. Paint the 2 miniature craft sticks orange. Let all painted surfaces dry completely.  
4. Place brown heart on work surface so that the pointed end is at the top. Glue the red heart onto the brown heart. The red heart should also be upside down, point facing upward, and should overlap the tip of the brown heart a little.  
5. Glue the brown football (head) on top of the red heart, allowing the bumps of the heart to show underneath the football (chin).  
6. Position the orange craft sticks underneath the brown wooden heart and glue in place for the legs.  
7. Place turkey on to a piece of wax paper. Arrange feathers behind the “turkey” to make its tail. When you have them where you want them, glue them in place and let dry. The wax paper will keep the glue for the feathers from sticking to the table.  
8. While feathers are drying, dip the handle end of the sponge applicator in to the white paint. Dot on eyes. Repeat this process with the handle end of the paint brush and black paint, adding the pupils.  
9. Use the paint brush and yellow paint to add a triangular beak.  
10. Allow everything to dry completely, then glue magnets to the back and let dry.
